Extrusions
Overview
Extrusions all about playing with light and shadows by pushing and pulling pieces of the drum surface to form evolving extruded structures.
Two flashing lights rotate around the drum head in sync with the music, casting shadows from and onto the structures created by the drum hits. Kick hits push the outer portions of the drum up, while stick hits to the center of the drum push pieces down in a series of alternating patterns.
As things slow down in the bridge, my sticks are able to select and extrude individual pieces of the drum surface while playing a melody. These slow extrusions cast sparse and intricate shadow patterns from the rotating lights.
Everything is performed and rendered in real-time
Virtual Reality Version
I recently (finally) started getting into VR and felt this would be a perfect song to test building VR worlds.
In this virtual performance you’re able to look down into the extruded 3D structures of my drum while also viewing the videos of my live performance from multiple angles.
This is a stereoscopic 3D video that can be viewed on the YouTube VR app in your headset.
You can also use a computer or mobile device to view and navigate this VR video! Moving your phone or swiping / mousing around your screen will allow you to look around the room.
